Double bill of children's comedy adventures. In 'Matilda' (1996) Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is an exceptionally gifted and intelligent child but her parents Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia (Rhea Perlman) neglect her and treat her with her contempt. A keen reader, her dearest wish is to go to school, but the establishment Harry selects is Crunchem Hall which is run by the brutal Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Her cruel treatment of her pupils and Matilda's favourite teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davidzt), inspires Matilda to use her newly discovered telekinetic powers to seek revenge and change her life. John Huston directs 'Annie' (1982), the screen adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the long-running comic strip 'Little Orphan Annie'. Annie (Aileen Quinn) lives a miserable life in an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett). A chance of escape and happiness comes Annie's way when she meets the wealthy and childless Daddy Warbucks (Albert Finney), but Hannigan and her colleagues soon conspire to get Annie back.
